How the numbers are worked out
- Hot water demand: 55 gallons a day, which is the medium-usage draw pattern the Department of Energy uses to rate every water heater sold in the US (10 CFR 430 Subpart B Appendix E, Table III.3).
- Temperature rise: 67 degrees F, the difference between the 58 degree F supply water and the 125 degree F delivery temperature specified in that same test procedure. At 8.33 lb per gallon that works out to 11.2 million Btu of hot water a year.
- Efficiency: the minimum uniform energy factor the law allows for each product class, from the table in 10 CFR 430.32(d). For a 50-gallon gas tank on the medium draw pattern that is 0.6483 minus 0.0017 times the rated volume, giving 0.5633. The electric equation gives 0.9207 and the heat pump equation gives 2.0456 at 65 gallons.

Why gas still beats standard electric on running cost: a gas tank throws away roughly 44 percent of the fuel it burns, against almost nothing for electric resistance, and yet gas wins. That is entirely down to price per unit of energy. At the prices above, natural gas delivers heat at about $14.80 per million Btu while electricity delivers it at about $50.70 per million Btu, a gap far bigger than the efficiency difference.
